This presentation on treating the child who has hypotonia will focus on specific strategies to improve motor control in this population. Techniques to improve proximal control, sustained postural movements against gravity, and symmetrical alignment will be demonstrated through use of videotapes, as well as practice labs.
Participants will learn treatment strategies that can be applied in various practice setting to improve functional performance and independence in children of all ages (infants through school age) with hypotonia.
1. Describe the basic knowledge and understanding of hypotonia treatment strategies for the hypotonic child.
2. Identify the major problems when abnormal motor control is observed.
3. Identify strategies to prevent the abnormal development of compensatory patterns in the hypotonic child.
4. Describe the importance of trunk and respiratory control for proximal stability to allow function in the extremities.
5. Identify whether if the sensory or motor system is the primary challenge for each patient with hypotonia.
6. Describe specific intervention strategies for establishing more efficient sensory-motor control in children with hypotonia.
