Course Description
This seminar presents a comprehensive assessment process including developmental, medical, psychological, oral-pharyngeal structure and function, respiratory function, movement and sensory issues, oral-motor function, and observation of feeding and swallowing activities. Pertinent information required to understand feeding and swallowing issues and needs, and when appropriate referral is necessary for specialized assessments such as swallow studies, behavioral strategies and oral-motor and feeding interventions are discussed. Handouts included in PDF file format.
Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the essential components of a clinical assessment of feeding and swallowing function.
2. Describe the instrumental assessment tools used in the assessment of feeding and swallowing.
3. Discuss the importance of nutrition for children with feeding and swallowing problems.
4. Discuss the differences between behavioral and physiological influences on mealtime feeding.
